Secrets of the Swedish Christmas Goat Revealed

January 28

Back in December I mentioned a Swedish tradition I'd heard about, concerning a certain large flaming goat. I was a little unclear on the specifics. Here's some clarity, courtesy of Pär:

If I recall correctly, the actual burning of the goat is not so much a tradition as a semi-recent and recurring prank. It is not known how hard the authorities really try to stop it.

The making of such goats is traditional; the goats are basic straw ornaments. Here is an example, from southern Sweden.

The burning of the huge flammable goat is, as far as I know, in one specific town, namely Gävle; a couple of illustrations.

I believe I drove past the goat once, but I never saw it burn.

I'm glad to have that cleared up. And next Christmas, I'll have a straw goat on the mantelpiece. Though I rather doubt I'll burn it.

I'll probably write another entry later tonight, lovelies.
