Mopism

March 20

No entry last night because I was feeling mopey.

I wrote the first two scenes of Rangergirl (~1500 words) last night, and for that 45 minutes, I was totally happy. I wrote at Pergolesi on D.'s Amazing Capricious Laptop. I drank a mocha chai (my rare-treat drink, the most expensive and delicious thing I ever order). I couldn't go much farther than those initial scenes, though. I know where the book is going, but I need to take some time and figure out the order of the scenes-- otherwise I'll have to trash it all and rearrange it. So tonight I plan to work on a partial outline and then write some more, though since I have to work late, I don't know how productive I'll be.

The writing is fine-- wonderful, even. It was pretty thrilling to write again after ten days without fiction. I'm having trouble getting focused at the day-job, though. I'm not sure why that is-- I guess it's just me still being distracted over Meg being gone. I'm going to grit my teeth and get stuff done today, though.

Otherwise last night... I moped around. Drank tea and read Tam Lin (it didn't used to take me weeks to finish reading a single novel, y'all-- my schedule is too fragmented and over-run lately). Went to bed kind of early.

Thanks to all of you who answered my desperate whine for e-mail! I got a lot of smiles out of those messages yesterday. It was especially nice to hear from those of you who'd never written before-- if there are any other quiet types lurking, don't hesitate to say hi.

I got a rejection from Weird Tales yesterday for a story that they'd had for a loooong time. It only made me more mopey. Here's part of it:

We have just reached a decision on your story... This one was good and very different, very tempting. We have read it over at least five different times without a final decision. Since we can't reach complete unanimity, we're sending it back with our apologies, calling it VERY good, but somehow not irresistible.

Sigh.

Weird Tales was only the third market I sent that story to-- I really thought it might be right for them.

Apparently I wasn't far wrong.

There are lots of other good places to send this one, and I'm confident that it will sell... but I could have really used a nice acceptance yesterday, you know? Ah, well. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, at least.
