Wisconward

May 23

I have to be up in about 5 hours, but I thought I'd stop in here briefly, before I take off for Wiscon and don't update again until Tuesday at the earliest.

No attempt at catching up on past days, here -- I'll just give you the relevant bits.

My story "The Witch's Bicycle" is appearing -- has appeared -- in the August issue of Realms, rather than the October issue, as they'd initially said. I don't mind earlier publication; I got my contributor's copy today, and the illustration is amazing; the Witch looks just as she should, and the bicycle nearly so, and the color really is the red of faded silk roses... I'm amazingly pleased. It's better than I'd dreamed. And there are little background details that make it clear the illustrator really read the story... I'm so happy I could twirl around in my chair. I think I will.

There. A little dizzy now. But I soldier on.

Also got my payment for "Witch's" today, so I'm super-rich for Wiscon, la. La. La!

Other stuff... my story "Stray" is going to be in the Fresh Blood anthology, which is a new development... I'm the only writer with three stories in the antho, because the editor really digs my stuff. Makes me happy. I like "Stray".

I saw the galley for The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror at work yesterday, and oh, Terri Windling says nice things about me, that I'm an "emerging fantasy writer", that "Annabelle's" is an "interstitial" work that inhabits the space between story and prose poem, between fantasy and horror, which is pretty much exactly my opinion of the piece. Oh, la, again. And I'm between Graham Joyce and Susanna Clarke stories (at least in the galley), which is a nice place to be. Mmm. So thrilling to see my story there, even in galley form!

I have two honorable mentions in that anthology, too, for "Behemoth" (which I knew about) and for my poem "Mask" from Strange Horizons (which I didn't know was going to be mentioned). A pleasant surprise.

Otherwise, the week's been good, busy, lots of work, not much in the way of fiction writing, though. I'm off to Wiscon tomorrow (spending all day zooming through the air at incredible speed!), where I expect to sleep only intermittently and have lots of fun. I have Galveston to read on the plane, and Heather to keep me company. I'll be back on Tuesday. I hope you all have a lovely long weekend.

Words written since last entry: I dunno, and I don't have time to look it up. Precious little, though.

Send me one of those bottles that's like a moebius strip made three-dimensional. What're they called? Klein bottles? One of those. A blue one.
