Coping With Scribendiphobia
August 16
I read The League of Extraordinary Gentleman last night-- really quite wonderful. It makes me want to write my own Victorian Superhero story (which I've actually had an idea about for some time). I stayed up late last night reading that, getting to bed around 2:30. Which is late, even for me.
More shelving, filing, driving and layout stuff at work today, though I learned some new things, which was cool. I spent my lunch break making notes for Rangergirl. I've gotten some very cool new ideas...
I got home and showered with Heather (because I overslept this morning and didn't have a chance to cleanse myself, and because she was nice enough to keep me company). We had a nice romp, then enjoyed a feast of leftovers and frozen food-- pizza, french fries, burritos. Oh, and iced tea, yum. We watched an episode of Buffy while we ate... sort of the standard chill-out procedure, though we will eventually run out of episodes to watch.
Writing-wise, I got a 21-day rejection from Fantastic, a plain-old-form. Bah. The plan tonight was to do a real writing-fest, and I was somewhat productive-- I did 2,180 words. Not a record-making night, but I think the writing is good, the scenes were fun and chatty and interesting and weird... this is a really cool book. I must confess, I have some trepidation still about writing a novel, after my last attempt failed so majestically. I mean, you'd think having completed four freaking novels would give me a modicum of confidence, but all I know is that I have written novels; not that I can write another. I mean, I don't see why I couldn't, but... Well. I'm trying to overcome the trepidation. It's just a form of performance anxiety, after all, and the best way to overcome that is to stop thinking about it and have fun. So. I'm having fun. It's a book full of mud and spilled beer, line drawings and harlequins, cute girls and sinister villains and cute villains and sinister girls. It's a genuine enjoyment.
Working at A Certain Magazine, I get to find out about all the upcoming books, and see their covers and occasionally glimpse review copies, which is neat... now I'm all excited about the new Joe Lansdale (Captains Outrageous), the new Clive Barker (Coldheart Canyon), and the new King and Straub sequel to The Talisman (Black House). So many books to read! Yum.
This journal's been a bit on the repetitive side of late, I guess... but that's because my life is consistently wonderful, you know?
I think I'm going to go pester Heather now.
If you're so inclined, send me mail.
