The Little Cream-Filled Blintz Has Gone Native. I'd Better Book.

Setember 21

La la la. Am second-string horror reviewer for A Certain Magazine. Edward Bryant does most of the horror reviews, and Jenny usually does any others, but since I'm more of a horror fan, I get to take a, heh, stab at it. A stab. At horror novel reviews. Yeah. I'm funny. So I have three books to maybe review for next month. My boss doesn't publish negative reviews-- mixed reviews, yes, but not wholly negative-- so let's hope I like at least one of the books. One of them looks very promising, and another somewhat promising, and the third... well, maybe it'll surprise me.

I spent all afternoon labeling pictures from Worldcon. Lots of pictures. I was surprised at how many faces I recognized; I knew who more than half the people were, which is pretty good, I think.

But to backfill-- last night I BARTed down to Hayward with Heather and Susan. We talked 'bout politics and books and '70's feminist novels and other things. We joined M'ris and Timprov and Mark to watch The Maxx, which is simply the loveliest movie. I own the whole first year of the comic, too (it got wacky in the second year, with a few good issues here and there, notably the one about the origins of Mr. Gone, which I don't own, alas), and I also have Comico Primer #5 (which dear D. tracked down for me, as I recall), which features the first appearance (in a radically different form) of the Maxx (or, as he was known then, Max the Hare). So we watched the tape, and then I told everyone about the couple of episodes of the series that had been cut from the "movie" version, and I told them a few things from the comic that aren't in the movie, that make the movie more sensical. But occasional inconsistencies aside, it's a nearly perfect film. I've seen it like a dozen times, and it still delights me. Yum.

The only drawback was that we got to Hayward kinda late, and watched the movie, and didn't get to talk much before it was time to go home. So the conversational aspect was lacking, but I guess you can't have everything; we'll have other movie nights that are less time-crunchy, in which we can converse at more length.

I came home this evening and snuggled Heather and shagged and then we went out to dinner, tra la. And I've been reading some, and playing Diablo II, and now writing this, and soon we shall watch The Avengers. And it's been a nice day.

The plan for tomorrow is to get up early(ish) and write, and write some e-mail, and do laundry in the afternoon, and have a nice date at night...
